Yokote City, created from the amalgamation of the 8 municipalities of Yokote-shi, Hiraka-machi, Omonogawa-machi, Ohmori-machi, Taiyu-mura, Sannai-mura, Jumonji-machi and Masuda-machi, is located in the Yokote Basin in the southern area of Akita Prefecture, and is bordered by the Ouu Ranges to the East and the Ideha Hills to the West. It stretches approximately 45km from East to West and 35km from North to South; and with an area of 693.59km2, it makes up approximately 6.0% of Akita Prefecture’s total land area. There are 182km2 of rice paddies and other fields, 374km2 of forest, 26km2 of moorlands, and 23km2 of residential land. The Omono River and the Yokote River, while shaping the land for rice paddies, contribute to the beautiful rural scenery. Climate: Temperatures can vary widely, even in a single day; winds are not very strong; and as a typical cold, snowy district, snow cover is recorded from December to March. Railways: The JR Ouu and Kitakami Lines run through the region; and it takes 3hrs 40mins via Ohmagari Station on the Akita Shinkansen, and then 4hrs 10 mins via Kitakami Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen to reach the Capital, Tokyo. Roads: National Highways 13 and 107 intersect the region, and in 1997, the Akita Expressway was connected with the Tohoku Expressway, making it possible to reach both Akita and Kitakami in 45 minutes. Furthermore, the Yuzawa-Yokote Road (to become Tohoku Chuo Expressway), which runs from the Yokote Junction, crosses the Akita Expressway; and National Highways 342 and 397, running to the East, connect Yokote with Ichinoseki City and Mizusawa in Iwate Prefecture, making Yokote an important ‘crossroads’ in Akita Prefecture.
